In a normally developing, sighted infant, movement is motivated by what the child sees. An infant with a vision impairment needs other types of stimulation to encourage skills necessary to walk and move. Many concepts must be developed early as a basis for orientation and mobility concepts the child will learn when he or she enters school.
Where in the World Am I? contains many concepts and skills that can be taught through play activities by parents, Teachers of the Visually Impaired, Orientation and Mobility Specialists or Early Childhood teachers. These activities can be incorporated into an ordinary day for a parent or a classroom full of young children (with or without vision). The materials used in these activities are easily purchased at any grocery store or department store. Concepts and sensory development are explained, with many photographs illustrating the various activities.
